Getting Started with Blackboard Learn

Event Description:

Prerequisites:  No prior experience with any version of Blackboard is required. Prior knowledge of essential computer skills (i.e. select/copy/paste text from one doc to another, format text in a word processor, navigate to files and folders on your own computer) are strongly recommended. In addition, you should know how to use a web browser (i.e., Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, etc.) to browse the Internet, conduct online searches, and navigate to specific URLs. 

This session will provide instructors with a solid introduction to the Blackboard Learn learning management system, which provides a standardized interface and a set of online educational tools that can help facilitate learning, communication and collaboration in on-ground, hybrid, and fully-online classes offered in the CT community colleges.

First you will be introduced to the common course shell template being used by the community colleges as of Spring 2019. With minor variations, all of the menu buttons, the sequence of buttons, and naming of menu items are now the same from one college to another. Faculty new to Blackboard are encouraged to create, organize, and sequence their course content using a consistent organizational structure that will be discussed in this session. This consistent organization will make it easier for students to move from one Blackboard course to another without having to re-learn how to navigate in each course. 

In this hands-on session, you will learn how to:
- upload your syllabus and other course documents
- organize your course content and resources inside folders
- understand the Course Menu and Control Panel
- create announcements
- create links to websites you want your students to visit
- learn the difference between Blackboard's Email and Messages tools
- how to view your course from a student's perspective on a mobile device

Everything you do in this session will be grounded in best practices of online course design and delivery, so you can design your courses right from the start in ways that will enhance and streamline your course navigation and content organization, communication strategies, and classroom management.
